What to Expect From AMA's New Driver Program?

The Value of Experience

We’re just going to put it out there: We know our programs may be more expensive than many other driving schools, but no one can compete with our proven track record for success. In over 75 years teaching proper driving skills to Albertans — that’s over 800,000 students — we’ve learned not to compromise on safety. We teach our students more than just how to pass a road test; we teach them how to be confident, proactive, and safe drivers for life.

That’s why we offer 18 hours of interactive classroom lessons — that’s more than most other driving schools, and even more than than the Provincial Government requires. Our instructors are provincially certified and get additional in-house training that goes beyond Alberta Transportation’s requirements. And as we know, better instructors make for safer, more confident students.

Speaking of confidence, we’ll make sure that both you and your new driver feel that you’ve gotten the most value from your experience with AMA Driver Education. If we’ve delivered beyond expectations, of course we’d love to hear from you. On the other end, if you feel that you didn’t quite get what we’d promised, we’ll do what it takes to make it right. Ultimately, we want to earn your confidence, no matter what the road has in store.

Alberta Transportation provides us with curriculum guidelines. The material not only meets, but exceeds these guidelines in our three New Driver programs: Basic, for drivers who have a good amount of driving experience; Premium, for those with some experience; and Ultimate, for new drivers with little-to-no driving experience.

AMA members save $80 on a New Driver course — that pretty much covers the cost of a new membership, in case you haven’t signed up yet. And grads also get a coupon worth up to $200 off their AMA auto insurance policy.

About Our New Driver Programs

Students come to us with different levels of experience. Some have spent hours in-vehicles with parent or coach helping them learn the basics of driving; some have never experienced the freedom of the driver’s seat. Not to worry, our three New Driver programs cater to each student’s experience level, so we can offer the right amount of help.

    • Our Basic New Driver program is perfect for the student who is comfortable behind the wheel, and has some practical driving experience. We work hand-in-hand with you to coach your teen to become a responsible driver.

    • The Premium New Driver program is for the student with little or no driving experience, but who’s able to practice with a coach or family member. This program is perfect for young drivers with some experience behind the wheel who want a little extra in-car practice time.

    • The Ultimate New Driver program is for the student who has had very limited driving experience and is unable to practice with a coach or family member, or needs more one-on-one instruction. This program is designed to help put the new driver at ease behind the wheel and includes extra instruction time in vehicle.

About Our In-Vehicle Instruction

Depending on the experience of the driver and the program purchased, some driving lessons can take up to six weeks or longer – and for good reason.

We make sure your teen understands all the important driving concepts before the final lesson ends through our one-on-one in-vehicle instruction. So we allow enough time between lessons for your teen to absorb the information we provide. That way they get it – for life.

Advocating for Safer Roads

We don’t just teach safety; we work for it. The AMA Foundation for Traffic Safety funds research that determines the causes of collisions and helps improve road safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. The Foundation cares about the safety of members like you, and the public — it’s about safer roads for everyone.
