How Do I Cancel My Policy?

If you need to cancel your home or auto insurance policy, for whatever reason, AMA is here to make the process as smooth as possible.

What are the basic steps in cancelling a policy?

Over the Phone?

  1. Make sure you have some basic information on you, such as your policy number. We will also need to speak to everyone who is named on the policy to complete a cancelation, so gather up everyone we need to talk to.
  2. Give us a call! We’re available by phone Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m (and even longer at select locations).
                     Toll-free: 1-800-615-5897
                     Calgary: (403) 517-4262
                     Edmonton: (780) 474-8777
  3. The first thing your AMA agent will do is verify your address. This is especially important if the reason you’re cancelling is due to moving, so we can get your cancellation documents to the right place for you!
  4. Next, we will ask you a few questions to confirm your identity. Keep in mind, we’ll need to speak to everyone who is a named insured on the policy, and confirm their identity too.
  5. Then we simply cancel the policy, and it will be processed on the date you request (so we can put it through immediately, or set the cancellation for a future date). If you are switching to another insurance company, make sure you don’t cancel your AMA policy before your next policy kicks in – you don’t want to be left with gaps between your insurance coverage.
  6. You may get a refund, or you may have to pay a fee, or both may apply. There is more information below.

In Person?

  1. We love seeing our members face-to-face! Feel free to stop by one of our many locations to cancel your policy.
  2. We will need to speak to everyone who is named on the policy to complete a cancelation. Make sure everyone needed is in attendance or available on the phone. Make sure everyone has ID on them to confirm your identity. If someone can’t come in, they can provide a written and signed letter stating they approve of the person present to cancel the policy.
  3. From here on out, the steps are the same as over the phone, so please just Follow the above steps.

Is there a cancellation fee?

Home & Property Insurance

  • Only within the first month or so. We charge the $100 fee on property policies if the policy is cancelled within the first 30 days. After 30 days, your refund will be calculated using a flat rate or it will be pro-rated.
  • If you’ve already pre-paid for the whole year, you will get the unused portion of your insurance back.
  • We cannot do immediate refunds. All refunds related to canceled policies have to be reviewed by our accounting department, and a cheque will be mailed out to you.

Auto Insurance

  • Yes, you will be charged a fee for cancelling your auto policy before the term is finished. The fee is a minimum of $100, but may increase depending on the amount your policy is for and how much time is still left on your policy. You can always cancel on the renewal date at the end of the policy term to avoid the fee.
