A Class 5 Advanced driver’s licence allows you to drive any two-axle vehicle.
Follow the steps below to ensure you can book an Advanced road test and earn your Class 5 driver’s licence.
To upgrade to a full Class 5 driver’s licence, you must:
Avoid the most common beginner mistakes and check out 3 Reasons Why Teens Fail the Class 5 Road Test.
Ensure you review and understand the road test terms and conditions—including the Vehicle Guidelines checklist to ensure that your vehicle is in proper working order—in advance of test day.
Unmet conditions may lead to cancelling the road test and forfeiting fees.
Arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled road test to pick up your prepaid test permit. You cannot begin the test without this permit.
You must provide a vehicle in proper working condition. (AMA doesn’t rent vehicles for road tests.) Ensure that you have valid insurance and registration for the vehicle and that you bring your Class 5 probationary licence.
The cost of a Class 5 Advanced road test scheduled through AMA Registries is $145.70 with tax. This breaks down as follows:
|Government of Alberta Fee (not taxable)||$5.00|
|Independent Driver Examiner Fee||$105.00|
|Third-Party Scheduling Fee*||$9.00|
|Total with Tax||$145.70|
The Class 5 Advanced road test takes approximately 60 minutes. Good luck!
*Note: This fee goes directly to an independent third party. AMA does not retain any portion of this fee.
If you pass your road test, you can reclassify your existing Class 5 probationary driver’s licence to a Class 5 non-probationary (advanced) licence.
If you plan to reclassify your licence following your road test, ensure that you bring a secondary piece of identification to reclass your licence at the Registries counter.
