How to Get a Class 5 Advanced Driver’s Licence

A Class 5 Advanced driver’s licence allows you to drive any two-axle vehicle.

Follow the steps below to ensure you can book an Advanced road test and earn your Class 5 driver’s licence.

Step One – Ensure You’re Eligible

To upgrade to a full Class 5 driver’s licence, you must:

If you’re taking this test to reinstate your licence, contact AMA Registries before you book to confirm that you’re eligible to take a Class 5 Advanced road test.

Step Two – Book Your Test

With AMA you can book a road test online, call 1-866-989-6370, or visit the Registries counter at your nearest AMA centre.

Step Three – Review the Terms and Conditions

Ensure you review and understand the road test terms and conditions—including the Vehicle Guidelines checklist to ensure that your vehicle is in proper working order—in advance of test day.

Unmet conditions may lead to cancelling the road test and forfeiting fees.

Step Four – Arrive Early with All the Proper Documentation

Arrive 30 minutes prior to your scheduled road test to pick up your prepaid test permit. You cannot begin the test without this permit.

You must provide a vehicle in proper working condition. (AMA doesn’t rent vehicles for road tests.) Ensure that you have valid insurance and registration for the vehicle and that you bring your Class 5 probationary licence.

Step Five – Take Your Test

The cost of a Class 5 Advanced road test scheduled through AMA Registries is $145.70 with tax. This breaks down as follows:

Government of Alberta Fee (not taxable) $5.00
Independent Driver Examiner Fee $105.00
Third-Party Scheduling Fee* $9.00
AMA Fee $20.00
Base Total $139.00
GST $6.70
Total with Tax $145.70

The Class 5 Advanced road test takes approximately 60 minutes. Good luck!

*Note: This fee goes directly to an independent third party. AMA does not retain any portion of this fee.

Step Six – Purchase Your Licence

If you pass your road test, you can reclassify your existing Class 5 probationary driver’s licence to a Class 5 non-probationary (advanced) licence.

If you plan to reclassify your licence following your road test, ensure that you bring a secondary piece of identification to reclass your licence at the Registries counter.
