Renters & Tenant Insurance

Renters Insurance (sometimes called tenant insurance) covers your valuables, furniture and personal items in case they are stolen, damaged or destroyed.

  • Your landlord’s insurance only covers the property itself – it doesn’t cover your stuff if it’s stolen, damaged, or destroyed. That’s why you need Renters Insurance.
  • Your renters policy provides liability coverage in case someone gets hurt while in your home or if you unintentionally injure someone or damage their property (including the building where you live).
  • Renters Insurance also provides coverage if you are evacuated from your home due to something like a forest fire.
  • Your renters insurance policy includes identity theft expense coverage, which helps to cover you financially if your identity is stolen. Identity theft expense coverage comes with no additional premium, and any claim under this coverage will not affect your claims-free status.
  • It’s an inexpensive investment (usually only a couple hundred dollars a year) that could mean significant savings if you ever suffer a loss.

You may not think your personal possessions are worth much, but consider what it would cost to replace all your belongings if they were damaged or destroyed. A few pieces of furniture, your clothing and some electronics can easily cost several thousand dollars to replace. Not only that, but as a renter you are responsible if someone gets hurt while at your home, or if you accidentally damage someone else’s property (including the building where you live).

Renters insurance provides basic liability coverage, which is comparable to what is included in a home insurance policy. It also includes personal property coverage for your belongings. It’s an inexpensive investment that could mean significant savings if you ever suffer a loss.
