Alberta Road Test Eligibility

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ROAD TESTING

ARRIVE 30 MINS EARLY TO PICK UP YOUR ROAD TEST PERMIT:

Please be present at the AMA office and ready 30 minutes prior to your Road Test to pick up your Road Test Permit. This permit is included in the cost of your Road Test. Your eligibility to take a Road Test will be confirmed on the Motor Vehicles system when your Road Test Permit is generated.

  • Only the person taking the Road Test or parent/guardian of a minor may purchase a Road Test Permit.
  • The road test permit is only valid at the AMA location where it is purchased.
  • The road test permit is valid for one year from the date it is purchased, and it is valid for one road test appointment.
  • Lost road test permits can be replaced for a fee of $9.45

A Road Test may be taken by a suspended driver who has met all suspension requirements. However, you must take full responsibility if you know that you will be suspended on the day of the exam. The examiner will not take a suspended driver out for road test unless the road test is a requirement for reinstatement.

If you have a temporary licence, you must provide secondary identification (e.g. Passport or Birth Certificate).

HAVE AN APPROPRIATE VEHICLE CLEAN AND READY:

You must provide a vehicle suitable for the class of test you are being tested for. If any of the Vehicle Guidelines conditions are not met, it will result in termination of your road test by the examiner and all fees will be forfeit. The test permit will be void and no longer valid.

  • You must provide proof of valid insurance and valid vehicle registration (names of each must match). Commercial vehicles must also have CVIP stickers (if applicable).
  • No passengers (including pets) will be allowed during the road test
  • Review Vehicle Requirements for the class of licence you will be testing for:

USING A RENTAL VEHICLE FOR A ROAD TEST:

AMA does not offer vehicles to rent for road tests. You are responsible for reviewing the terms and conditions of any rental agreement to determine if your rental vehicle can be used for road testing purposes.

When a rental vehicle (i.e. Hertz, Avis) is being used for the road test, the name of the client taking the road test must be on the rental contract as the main driver or an additional driver.

Vehicles rented from daily rental services (i.e. Car2Go) may be ineligible for road test usage.

Your Government Certified Road Test Examiner:

We only work with the best independently contracted, Alberta Government Certified Driver Examiners. The examiner will sit in the front passenger seat during the driving portion of your exam.

You may not request a particular examiner. You will have the opportunity to let us know about your experience, and we take your feedback very seriously, but bear in mind that AMA Registries does not intervene with the result of the road test.

If you have any questions and/or concerns regarding your driver examination road test, please contact: Alberta Transportation (Drivers Programs and Licensing Standards) at (403) 297-6679 or (780) 427-8901.

Visual Screening

You may be required to pass a visual screening as a requirement to be issued your licence. If you have a Condition Code A on you licence, it is your responsibility to wear corrective lenses (contacts or glasses) while operating a vehicle. If you have had corrective eye surgery, it is your responsibility to have the Code A removed by a Registry Agent prior to your road test or provide proof of corrective surgery.

RESCHEDULING OR CANCELING YOUR ROAD TEST:

RESCHEDULING

You can reschedule your road test up to 24 hours in advance of your appointment time. There is a $15 re-booking fee. Give us a call or visit us in-centre to rebook: 1-866-989-6370.

CANCELLING

If you need to cancel your road test, we need a minimum of 48 hours in advance of the appointment time to notify the examiner. There is a $25 cancellation fee. Give us a call or visit us in-centre if you need to cancel: 1-866-989-6370.

Cancellation within 48 hours of a road test appointment is non-refundable.

ALBERTA ROAD TEST ELIGIBILITY

DETERMINING YOUR ELIGIBILITY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY

Alberta Drivers Licences have eligibility requirements. If you plan on reserving and purchasing your road test online, you are required to ensure that you are eligible to take the respective road examinations. The basics you need to make sure you meet include:

  • Age requirements
  • Proper Documentation (insurance, Registration, etc)
  • Parent/Guardian Consent if you are under 18
  • You may only take one test per day

There are no refunds on road tests if it has been determined that you are ineligible or are unable to get a test permit, so it is important to ensure you are eligible. This includes booking a road test online with reinstatement conditions or booking the wrong class of road test.

Please refer to the appropriate licence testing pages for more information on eligibility:

Give one of our registry agents a call or visit us in-centre for questions regarding eligibility before booking your road test: 1-866-989-6370.

You can also contact Driver Fitness & Monitoring, Alberta Transportation Safety Board for licensing eligibility questions and reinstatement conditions questions.

ELIGIBILITY ISSUES

Issues that may affect your eligibility may include:

  • Reinstatement Conditions
  • Age Restrictions
  • Dates of Eligibility
  • Unpaid Fines
  • Medical Conditions: If you are taking your road test at the request of a physician, you may not be eligible to book online. Please contact the registry where you plan on taking your road test before you book online.
  • Condition codes

If you have a condition code on your driver’s licence that requires you to take periodic road test examinations required by driver fitness monitoring, you may not be eligible to book online. Please contact AMA Registries by calling 1-866-989-6370 before you book online.

  • You must hold a valid Alberta Operator’s Licence to be eligible for any road tests regardless of the class.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS AND LETTERS FROM DRIVER FITNESS (NOTICE TO REPORT)

If you have been ordered by your doctor or driver fitness & monitoring to take a road test (notice to report), your Authorized No-Charge Road Test appointments must be scheduled in-person at an AMA centre, and you need to:

  • Provide your current Driver’s Licence
  • Bring your Notice to Report from Driver Fitness & Monitoring
  • Have a Condition Code E (Periodic Driver Examination) on your driver’s licence authorized by Driver Fitness & Monitoring
  • Pay a $50.00 appointment booking deposit for their authorized no-charge road test.
    • The deposit will be fully refunded when you attend your scheduled road test appointment. The deposit is non-refundable if you do not to appear for the scheduled appointment.

Please do not book your road test online: AMARoadTesting.ca online service fees will not be refunded – you must book this in person at a registry office.

If you fail a medically required road test:

  • You must be accompanied by another licensed driver as you are not allowed to drive immediately if you have failed the road test. A Class 7 learner’s licence will be issued to you.
  • If a subsequent road test is required, you are responsible for all associated fees.

Give one of our registry agents a call or visit us in-centre for questions regarding eligibility and the booking process: 1-866-989-6370.

IMPAIRED DRIVER REINSTATEMENT REQUIREMENTS

Depending on the type of suspension, there are many different conditions to getting your driver’s licence reinstated, including completing an impaired driving course. If you’re also required to take a knowledge test or complete a road test, visit an AMA centre near you.

Note: If Licence has been expired more than three (3) years a knowledge test permit will be required. You can also contact Driver Fitness & Monitoring, Alberta Transportation Safety Board for questions about licensing reinstatement conditions.

For more information, visit Alberta’s approach to impaired driving.

CLASS 5 REINSTATEMENT CONDITIONS FOR ROAD TESTING

Individuals who must take their Class 5 basic road test as a reinstatement condition must first be eligible. Usually a date of eligibility is associated with the reinstatement condition.

Give one of our registry agents a call or visit us in-centre for questions regarding eligibility and the booking process: 1-866-989-6370.
