COACHING A NEW DRIVER FOR PARENTS & GUARDIANS

WHY DO NEW DRIVERS NEED DRIVER’S TRAINING?

Driving for the first time can be pretty scary – for both you and your teen. Driver Education helps new drivers feel more confident, and hands-on experience with highly trained instructors make anyone feel more prepared.

Confidence and training behind the wheel leads to safer driving choices and fewer collisions.

  • Learning and developing safe driving habits from professional instructors helps prevent serious collisions.
  • Parents or other non-professional teachers can often pass on bad habits without even being aware of it.
  • Our instructors are highly trained to teach and work with new drivers to develop safe habits.
  • Driving is a big responsibility, and unfortunately teen and young drivers are a high-risk category.

We have a variety of programs to suit the needs of most new drivers, but give us a call if you have any questions or concerns about the needs of your new driver: 1-833-374-8733

At AMA, we train for a lifetime of safe driving, rather than just passing the road test.

  • We’ve been setting new driver’s up for success for over 80 years.
  • We’re proud to have helped over 850,000 Albertan’s become confident drivers.

The minimum age to get a learner’s permit is 14, 16 for a class 5 GDL, and 18 for a full Class 5 licence. Keep in mind only you and your teen can evaluate whether they are ready to learn.

LEARNERS LICENCE PREP | THE GDL LICENSING PROCESS

We’ve found more and more that parents and students are putting off learning to drive. This can be for a variety of reasons including cost, readiness, and even not seeing it as needed. Driving is an important decision, and it’s good to be ready. One thing to keep in mind is that the licensing process in Alberta is at least a 3-year process, so the longer you delay starting the process, the longer you delay the result of getting a drivers licence as well.

Getting into a habit takes practice:

With multiple in-car sessions in each of our key programs, we set up our students with good routines and help them develop good habits.

We have a lot of tips and tricks to help make the more complex maneuvers and practices easy to remember. It’s your role as coach to help practice these routines and build consistent driving behaviours.

Our classes stress getting into important life-saving habits, like:
  • Buckling up
  • Combating distracted driving
  • Driving at a safe speed
  • Making sure not to drink and drive

COACHING NEW DRIVERS

As a coach, you play a critical role in helping new drivers become responsible proactive drivers. As a parent, even though you may have enrolled your teen in driver education, you still play a major role in the process.

OUR COACHING GUIDE:
  • Helps you assess the risks associated with new drivers
  • Helps you know when your teen is ready to drive
  • Provides information on what to consider when handing the keys over to your teen
  • Give practical tips, suggestions and practice sessions

We also include a printable driving log to track your practice hours, and a sample driving contract you can use to set expectations.
