ALBERTA MOTORCYCLE & MOPED LICENSING

Alberta has a 3-stage process for getting a motorcycle licence. With a Class 6 licence you can drive motorcycles, mopeds, and trikes.

You must have at least your Class 7 learner’s permit for one year
You must complete a Class 6 Motorcycle/Moped written exam
You must pass your Class 6 Road Test

BEFORE YOU RIDE

To qualify to learn to ride a motorcycle, you need to:
  • be 16 years of age or older
  • hold a valid driver’s licence/learners permit
As a learning rider, before you have a class 6 licence, you must have a supervisor. The person supervising you must:
  • hold a full Class 5 (Advanced) driver’s licence
  • hold a full class 6 driver’s licence
  • provide supervision at all times by: being seated on the learning rider’s motorcycle, or following on another motorcycle, or following in a vehicle

CLASS 6 MOTORCYCLE LICENSING PROCESS

1. Class 7 – Learners Licence

Need your Class 7 Learners Licence? We can help!

2. Class 6 Written Exam for Motorcycle Licence

The motorcycle knowledge test must be passed before the road test is taken. It is a multiple choice written exam with 30 multiple choice questions done on a computer station. You must get 25 questions correct to pass.

You can take your Class 6 Written Exam at any of our locations.

The knowledge test consists of 30 questions about:

  • safe-driving practices for motorcycle riders
  • rules of the road
  • traffic control signs and signals
  • licensing information

3. Class 6 Road Test for Motorcycle Licence

This road test looks at basic driving skills you have obtained during year that you held your class 7 learner’s licence. We recommend at least 60 hours of practice riding to prepare. We highly recommend a motorcycle training course.

The Class 6 road test is 45-60 minutes in length. You will be tested on basic motorcycle driving skills such as:

  • Using the controls and switches of the vehicle you will be testing in
  • Basic vehicle safety
  • Speed limits
  • Uncontrolled/controlled intersection management
  • Parking (uphill | downhill | parallel)
  • Changing lanes properly & safely
  • Right & left turns
  • School/playground zones
  • Riding at a slow speed
  • Starting and moving on a hill

PREPARING FOR YOUR CLASS 6 MOTORCYCLE TESTS

We recommend reviewing the Alberta Rider’s Guide to Operation, Safety and Licensing Motorcycles, Mopeds & Power-Assisted Bicycles and Alberta Basic Licence Driver’s Handbook before your test.

We recommend taking a certified motorcycle rider training course to learn how to ride a motorcycle safely. Balance and control skills are taught at these courses, as well as motorcycle riding theory.

Important motorcycle skills riders need to develop are covered in these programs, including:

  • weaving left and right through markers (serpentine)
  • making a circle or figure eight pattern while riding
  • riding at a slow speed in a straight line
  • shifting up, shifting down then turning left and right
  • changing gears to prepare for curves
  • starting and moving on a hill
  • stopping quickly in an emergency
  • steering and braking methods to avoid obstacles or a collision
