The Pop-Culture Vulture
Play retro arcade games, take your picture with the DeLorean, and geek-out over dozens of movie-inspired education stations at POPnology, the newest exhibit at Telus World of Science – Edmonton. Because nothing tests a relationship like beating your date’s high score at Donkey Kong.
If you’re more the Netflix-and-chill type, mix things up by taking movie night on the road. Landmark Cinemas has locations across the province – some with leather recliners! – affordable ticket prices, and an ambience that sets the mood in a way that yoga pants on your couch can’t. (Yes, even if they are your “dress” yoga pants.)
The Outdoor Enthusiast
After a frigid February kept many dates indoors, a cure for cabin fever is in order. You’ll find it at the Edmonton Valley Zoo and Calgary Zoo, which are both perfect for a date day. Alberta’s winter wonderland transforms familiar exhibits into something new and magical, while cooler temperatures mean thinner crowds (and in Calgary, daily penguin walks!). You’ll also find many of the animals are more active than in the sleepy summer – think wolves, bears, red pandas and alpacas. Who says you need to be Christian Grey to make your date activities exotic?
Your bookshelf is filled with crime thrillers, your DVR is a collection of whodunnits, and your laundry machine has yet to “disappear” a sock you couldn’t find (seriously, that is a skill). Put that problem-solving prowess to the test on a double-date in an escape room.
The Locked Room in Calgary features three locations and 13 rooms whose themes span everything from video games (recover the princess!) to a bad hangover (recover your memories!). Over in Edmonton, couples will likewise love Logic Lock, where the four available mysteries include an art forgery and poltergeist haunting.
The Sports Fan
Skiing, snowboarding and skating are all so obvious. But golfing? Now that’s something your date will never see coming (fore!). Live Golf in Airdrie has golf simulators that combine high-resolution images with geophysical and satellite data to make you feel like you’re on the course.
If the real deal is more your speed, Monster Mini Golf in Edmonton is the place to head for 18 holes with a twist: the game is played under black lights. Your teeth have never looked whiter, gorgeous!
