Ditching the Ditch

No matter what the season, when you’re travelling along the highway, you’ll often see vehicles stuck in the ditch. This could be a result of inattention, driver fatigue, or driving too fast for conditions.

When driving by a stranded motorist, resist the urge to get out to help them out. Unless you have the proper training or equipment, you’re putting yourself at risk. Too many injuries and fatalities have happened when someone was trying to help get a vehicle out of a ditch.

Here’s what you should do instead:

  • Pull over to a safe location.
  • Stay in your vehicle.
  • Call 911.
  • Wait for someone who is properly trained who can arrive with the appropriate equipment to help.

What to do if you end up in the ditch:

  • Stay in your vehicle.
  • Call 911.
  • Wait for help.
  • Access your emergency kit if you need to.
