If you’re planning your summer vacation in and around Alberta, and looking to try something different, these suggestions just may put some ideas in your head:
Chow Down at the Calgary Zoo
One of Calgary’s best-kept brunch secrets is Safari Sunday at the Calgary Zoo. Located in the heart of Destination Africa, the elaborate family affair includes gourmet and comfort foods alike, including a chocolate fountain with fresh fruit, silky eggs Benedict, a Belgian waffle bar and made-to-order omelettes. Arrive before noon to score an Early Bird Combo Rate that includes zoo entrance and brunch. AMA members save an additional 20% off park admission.
Rock Out at Jubilations Dinner Theatre
Ferris Bueller’s School of Rock is playing until June 18th at Jubilations Dinner Theatre in Calgary. The three-act musical romp imagines what might happen if, 30 years after his infamous school-skipping escapade, Ferris were to find himself in the role of teacher. In Edmonton, the 80s theme continues with Flashdance: An 80s Flashback. The show price includes table service with a four-course meal, and AMA members save as much as $25 per ticket ($5 in reward dollars per admission can also be earned by purchasing ticket vouchers at any AMA centre). Oooooooh yeaaaaah!
Discover the Dinosaurs in Drumheller
One of the world’s premier palaeontology museums, the Royal Tyrrell Museum houses an internationally renowned collection of dinosaur fossils, including childhood favourites such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Triceratops. Stop to admire Albertosaurus, too. It’s the species whose skull first brought the dinosaurs of the badlands to light. AMA members save 10% on admission.
Kick Off Summer at an FC Edmonton Game
Given the Oilers’ recent NHL playoff run, it can be easy to forget that there are other sports teams in Edmonton. Kick-off summer by attending an action-packed FC Edmonton game. On the heels of clinching a North American Soccer League playoffs berth last year, the team is looking to further establish itself as one of the league’s top squads. On June 10, FC Edmonton hosts the Ottawa Fury at Clarke Stadium, and San Francisco Deltas on June 14. See the FC website for the full summer schedule. AMA members save 20% or more on admission.
Plan Your Golf Trail
Golf and road trips go together like cake and ice cream. Beer and nachos. Wine and cheese. You get the idea. In Alberta, there are many options when it comes to planning a stick-swinging sojourn. Scenic highways peppered with pristine courses zig and zag their way through Wildrose Country. Part of the fun is mapping a route that speaks to you and the particular golfing experiences you favour. Alberta, of course, has them all in spades: fairways nestled amongst Rockies peaks and river valleys; tee boxes boasting widescreen prairie vistas; greens set against a backdrop of Badlands hoodoos and coulees. Pick up a Canada Golf Card and plan your own golf trail. AMA Members save 25% on the Canada Golf Card, a discount card that’s valid at hundreds of golf courses across the country, as well as in the U.S. and Mexico.
