Supporting Alberta Food Banks This Holiday Season

Food banks struggle to keep up with the growing need for support every holiday season. This year, largely due to layoffs in the energy sector, the need for donations is even higher. A devastating 23% higher in Alberta alone, and our increase in food bank usage has actually raised the national average, according to Food Banks Canada’s annual HungerCount report.

In March 2015, over 67,000 Albertans sought food bank services to provide meals for themselves and their families. Of those, 40% were children, and it breaks our hearts to see so many families struggling, especially at this time of the year.

How You Can Support Local Food Banks

Our Fill Our Fleet program delivers donations to local food banks through the winter season. Help us provide support where it’s needed the most by donating online or dropping off a new teddy bear at an AMA centre between Dec. 12-19. Food banks have the ability to stretch every dollar, and can supply three meals from just a $1 donation. And for every new teddy bear we receive, we’ll donate an additional $10 to local food banks.

Bring your donation to an AMA centre during the times listed on Dec. 12 and you’ll also get a free photo with Santa.

Last Year’s Fill Our Fleet Results

Last year, Fill Our Fleet delivered over $100,000 worth of donations collected from AMA members, friends, family, and employees to charities across Alberta. That translated to 78 pallets of food and toys. This season, let’s all work to give Albertans a happy holiday season, one donation at a time.

Read Food Banks Canada’s HungerCount (pdf) report for more information, and from our family to yours, we hope you have a wonderful holiday season.
