How to Prevent Frosty Pipes

Frozen is great for Disney movies, not so great for the pipes in your home. As the temperatures drop in Alberta, the risk of freezing pipes increases. If you’re planning a winter getaway, here are some quick tips to keep in mind.

  • If you’re gone for more than four consecutive days during the regular heating season (months your furnace is on), AMA Insurance policies require you to drain your pipes and turn off your water or have someone check your home every day. If you don’t have someone check your home while you’re away and damage happens from the freezing of indoor plumbing, you may not be covered.
  • Keep your thermostat set at 15 C or higher.
  • If you haven’t drained your pipes, have your trusted friend or neighbour check in and run them daily. Running water through the taps will reduce the chances of freezing.
